Today at Son Seekers:
Your child learned that living for God is not only about big spiritual moments. We talked about how ordinary choices can honor God too — helping, listening, cleaning up, telling the truth, playing fair, doing our best, and treating others with kindness.
Today’s Simple Truth:
Even ordinary things can honor God when I do them with the right heart.
Bible Verse We Talked About:
Colossians 3:23 (New International Reader’s Version)
Work at everything you do with all your heart. Work as if you were working for the Lord.
In Simple Words:
The Bible teaches that the things we do every day can matter to God. Living for God is not only something adults do, and it is not only something that happens at church. Children can learn to honor God in normal parts of life: chores, schoolwork, games, friendships, cleanup time, listening, helping, and making honest choices.
Your child learned that God cares about both what we do and the heart behind it. We do not do good things to make God love us. God loves us first. Because we are loved by God, we can respond by doing ordinary things with a willing, loving, and faithful heart.
Ask Your Child:
What is one ordinary thing you do every day?
How could that ordinary thing honor God?
What is the difference between doing something with a grumpy heart and doing it with a willing heart?
Try This Together:
Pick one ordinary family task today and talk about how it could be done with a good heart.
Examples:
Cleaning up after dinner
Putting toys away
Helping with laundry
Getting ready for bed
Doing homework
Helping a sibling
Feeding a pet
Listening the first time
Ask: “How could we do this in a way that shows love?”
Simple Prayer Option:
If praying out loud is new for your family, you can simply read this together:
“God, thank You that ordinary moments matter to You. Help us live for You every day. Teach us to help, listen, work, play, and treat others with hearts that honor You. Amen.”
If You Are New to This:
This does not have to become a long or formal conversation. You can simply say, “Even small choices matter,” or “Let’s do this with a good heart.” Faith can be practiced in the normal routines your family already has.
Parent Encouragement:
Children often think important things have to be big, exciting, or noticed by others. Today’s truth helps them see that small, faithful choices matter too. A child who helps without being asked, tells the truth, apologizes, listens, or tries again is learning that everyday life can be meaningful.
Adult Devotion:
The Ordinary Things Matter
Scripture: Colossians 3:23 NIV
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.
Devotional Reading:
Colossians 3:23 begins with a word that reaches into every corner of life: whatever.
“Whatever you do” includes the things that feel meaningful, visible, and important. But it also includes the ordinary things: dishes, laundry, emails, work tasks, errands, chores, caregiving, conversations, bedtime routines, cleanup, responsibilities, interruptions, and the small work no one seems to notice.
Many of us are tempted to divide life into two categories. Some things feel spiritual or significant. Other things feel routine, frustrating, boring, or beneath notice. But this verse reminds us that ordinary life can become a place where we honor God.
That does not mean every task will feel exciting. It does not mean we should become obsessed with productivity or measure our worth by how much we accomplish. It means the heart behind our everyday choices matters.
There is a difference between doing something only for praise and doing it with love.
There is a difference between serving because people are watching and serving because it is right.
There is a difference between doing the minimum and offering faithful effort.
There is a difference between carrying responsibility with resentment and asking God to shape our heart in it.
This is especially important in family life. So much of what matters most happens in repeated, ordinary moments. A patient answer. A quiet apology. A task done faithfully. A kind tone after a long day. A decision to help even when no one claps. A choice to do what is right when no one is watching.
Those moments may not look impressive, but they are forming us.
Living for God every day does not mean making every moment dramatic or religious. It means learning to offer ordinary life back to Him. It means asking, “How can I honor God in this responsibility, this conversation, this task, this attitude, this next choice?”
God’s love comes first. We are not earning His love by doing ordinary things well. We are responding to His love by letting even ordinary things become part of a faithful life.
Today, the small things in front of you may matter more than they seem.
Adult Reflection Questions:
What ordinary responsibility do I sometimes treat as unimportant or frustrating?
Where am I tempted to do the right thing only when someone notices or appreciates it?
What is one ordinary task, conversation, or choice I can offer to God today?
Simple Prayer:
“God, thank You that ordinary moments matter to You. Help me honor You in the small things today. Shape my heart in the work, responsibilities, conversations, and choices in front of me. Help me live from Your love, not for approval. Amen.”
Optional Next Step:
Choose one ordinary task today that you usually rush through or resent. Before doing it, pause and quietly say, “God, I offer this to You.”
