Today at Son Seekers:
Your child learned that Jesus calls His people the light of the world. We talked about how shining God’s light does not mean showing off, trying to be the center of attention, or being perfect. It means letting God’s love show through everyday choices like kindness, honesty, courage, inclusion, apology, encouragement, and serving others.
Today’s Simple Truth:
My life can help others see God’s love.
Bible Verse We Talked About:
Matthew 5:14–16 (New International Reader’s Version)
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill can’t be hidden. 15 Also, people do not light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand. Then it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in heaven.
In Simple Words:
Jesus used the picture of light to help us understand how our lives can affect others. Light helps people see. In the same way, our words, choices, attitudes, and actions can help people see something true about God’s love.
Your child learned that shining is different from showing off. Showing off says, “Look at me.” Shining God’s light says, “Look at what love can do.”
A child can shine God’s light by including someone who feels left out, telling the truth, apologizing, helping quietly, using kind words, refusing to join in when someone is being unkind, or choosing what is right even when it is hard.
Ask Your Child:
What does light help people do?
What is the difference between shining God’s light and showing off?
What is one choice you can make that helps others see God’s love?
Try This Together:
At some point today, talk about “light moments” you noticed.
A light moment could be:
Someone used kind words.
Someone helped without needing attention.
Someone told the truth.
Someone apologized.
Someone included another person.
Someone chose not to join in with something unkind.
Ask: “What is one light moment we could practice tomorrow?”
Simple Prayer Option:
If praying out loud is new for your family, you can simply read this together:
“God, help Your love shine through us. Help us use our words, choices, and actions to show kindness, truth, courage, and love. Help our lives point toward You. Amen.”
If You Are New to This:
You do not have to use perfect spiritual words to talk about this with your child. You can simply ask, “How can our family show love today?” Small conversations like that help children connect faith with real life.
Parent Encouragement:
Children are learning every day how their words and choices affect others. Today’s truth helps them see that influence is not just about being popular or noticed. Even quiet choices can matter. A kind word, a brave choice, or an apology can make love visible in a way a child can understand.
Adult Devotion:
Not a Spotlight, But a Light
Scripture: Matthew 5:14–16 NIV
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Devotional Reading:
When Jesus says, “You are the light of the world,” it can be easy to hear that through the noise of our attention-driven world. We may think of shining as standing out, being noticed, becoming impressive, or doing something visible enough for others to recognize.
But Jesus is not describing a spotlight. He is describing light.
A spotlight says, “Look at me.”Light says, “Now you can see.”
That difference matters.
Jesus says His people are to let their light shine so others may see their good deeds and glorify the Father. The goal is not attention for us. The goal is that something about God’s goodness, love, truth, and mercy becomes visible through our lives.
That can happen in ordinary ways.
A patient response can be light.A quiet act of service can be light. An honest apology can be light.A choice to tell the truth can be light.A refusal to join in cruelty can be light.A steady, kind presence in a tense moment can be light.
Many of the moments that reveal God’s love are not dramatic. They may not be praised. They may not be noticed by many people. But they still matter.
This is important for adults because we can easily confuse faithfulness with visibility. We may wonder if our good choices matter when no one sees them. We may feel pulled toward doing good in ways that earn approval. Or we may hide our light because we feel unsure, tired, disappointed, or afraid of standing out.
Jesus gives us a better way. We do not have to perform. We do not have to build a spotlight around ourselves. We are invited to let God’s love become visible through the life we already have, with the people already in front of us.
Today, consider what your life is making easier for others to see. Are your words making kindness visible? Is your tone making patience visible? Are your choices making honesty, humility, courage, or love visible?
None of us shines perfectly. But with God’s help, our ordinary lives can point beyond ourselves.
Adult Reflection Questions:
Where do I feel tempted to confuse shining with being noticed?
What do my words, tone, and choices tend to make visible to the people closest to me?
What is one ordinary way I can help God’s love become more visible today?
Simple Prayer:
"God, help Your love shine through my life. Free me from performing for attention, and help me live in a way that points toward You. Let my words, tone, choices, and actions make Your love easier to see. Amen.”
Optional Next Step:
Choose one ordinary moment today where you can practice being light without needing credit. Use a kind word, offer help, apologize, tell the truth, or encourage someone quietly.
