Today at Son Seekers:

Your child learned that they can ask God for wisdom when they do not know what to do. We talked about how wisdom helps us pause, pray, ask for help, and choose what is good, true, loving, and right.

Today’s Simple Truth:

I can ask God for wisdom when I do not know what to do.

Bible Verse We Talked About:

James 1:5 (New International Reader’s Version)

5 If any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it. He will give it to you. God gives freely to everyone and doesn’t find fault.

In Simple Words:

Wisdom is more than knowing facts or having the right answer quickly. Wisdom helps us know what is good and right, then choose to do it.

Everyone needs wisdom sometimes. Children may need wisdom when they feel angry, embarrassed, nervous, left out, confused, or unsure what to do next. Adults need wisdom too.

Today, children learned that asking God for wisdom is not weak or embarrassing. It is wise. God invites us to come to Him when we need help.

Ask Your Child:

  1. What is wisdom?

  2. When is a time someone might need wisdom?

  3. What can you pray when you do not know what to do?

Try This Together:

As a family, talk about a simple situation where someone might need wisdom.

For example:

“What should someone do if they feel angry and want to say something hurtful?”

“What should someone do if they made a mistake and want to hide it?”

“What should someone do if a friend asks them to leave someone out?”

Then practice these three steps:

Pause — What am I feeling?

Pray — God, give me wisdom.

Choose — What is one wise next step?

Simple Prayer Option:

If praying out loud is new for your family, you can simply read this together:

“God, thank You that we can ask You for wisdom. When we do not know what to do, help us pause, pray, ask for help, and choose what is good, true, loving, and right. Amen.”

If You Are New to This:

You do not have to know exactly how to explain every situation. A simple prayer like, “God, give us wisdom,” is a meaningful place to start.

You can also help your child by asking, “What would be kind, truthful, and wise?”

Parent Encouragement:

Children learn wisdom by watching adults slow down before reacting. When they see you pause, pray, ask for advice, apologize, or choose patience, they are seeing wisdom in everyday life.

God gives wisdom generously. He helps children, and He helps adults too.

Adult Devotion:

Wisdom for the Next Right Step

Scripture:   James 1:5  NIV

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Devotional Reading:

James 1:5 is both honest and comforting. It does not shame us for lacking wisdom. It assumes there will be moments when we do not know what to do — and it tells us where to go.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God.”

That invitation is simple, but it is not shallow. Wisdom is different from information. We can have plenty of information and still not know how to respond with patience, humility, courage, or love. We can know the facts of a situation and still need God to help us see what is true, what is wise, and what the next right step should be.

Children need wisdom in everyday moments. They need wisdom when they are angry, embarrassed, left out, nervous, disappointed, or unsure. They need wisdom when the easy choice and the right choice are not the same.

Adults need wisdom too.

We need wisdom for conversations we do not know how to start. We need wisdom for decisions that do not feel obvious. We need wisdom when our emotions are loud. We need wisdom when we are tired and tempted to react. We need wisdom when we want to protect our pride, avoid discomfort, or rush ahead without listening.

James reminds us that asking for wisdom is not weakness. It is humility. It is admitting, “God, I do not see everything clearly. I need Your help.”

God does not roll His eyes when we ask. He gives generously. That does not always mean the answer comes instantly or the situation becomes easy. Sometimes wisdom looks like pausing before speaking. Sometimes it looks like asking someone trustworthy for counsel. Sometimes it looks like choosing patience. Sometimes it looks like apologizing. Sometimes it looks like waiting. Sometimes it looks like taking one faithful step while the rest of the path is still unclear.

Today, you may not need wisdom for a life-changing decision. You may need wisdom for an ordinary moment — how to respond, what to say, when to listen, when to act, when to ask for help, or how to choose what is loving and true.

That matters.

Small wise choices shape the direction of our lives. They shape our families, our leadership, our relationships, and our hearts.

God invites you to ask.

Not after you have figured everything out. Not after you have exhausted every option. Not only when the situation is big enough to feel spiritual.

Ask now.

“God, give me wisdom.”

He is generous, patient, and near.

Adult Reflection Questions:

  1. Where do I most need wisdom right now?

  2. When I feel unsure, do I tend to pause and ask God for wisdom, or react from pressure?

  3. What would a wise next step look like today?

Simple Prayer:

“God, thank You that You give wisdom generously. I admit that I do not always know what to do, what to say, or how to respond. Help me pause before reacting. Give me wisdom that is patient, humble, loving, and true. Show me the next right step today. Amen.”

Optional Next Step:

Before one decision, response, or conversation today, pause and pray:

“God, give me wisdom.”

Then take the next step slowly and faithfully.
